The Pediatric Ultrasound Course is a two day introductory course that covers all the primary applications of pediatric/emergency ultrasound. The course is arranged so lectures are given in the morning with concentrated hands on lab experience in the afternoon both days. The lab uses live models for a realistic training experience and we provide adequate faculty coverage to ensure a significant hands on experience for each participant.

The Pediatric Emergency Ultrasound Course is awarded 14.25 hours of AMA PRA Category 1TMCME for the time spent in the classroom and training lab sessions. 
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of Center for Emergency Medical Education (CEME) and 3rd Rock Ultrasound, LLC.

Upon completion of the Pediatric Ultrasound Course, participants will be able to :

1) Demonstrate the ability to properly operate and ultrasound machine and make adjustments to obtain adequate image quality.

2) Acquire ultrasound images for needed for the evaluation of Appendicitis, Intussusception, and Pyloric Stenosis. 

3) Acquire ultrasound images used to determine injuries in the Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma exam.  

4) Use ultrasound to facilitate the intravascular placement of catheters.

1000-1045 Ultrasound-Guided Vascular Access
An overview of how to use ultrasound to help guide central venous access and peripheral venous access. Multiple Phantoms are used in lab to help students get real time practice.
1045-1130 Trauma Ultrasound
What is "FAST"? This lecture provides an introduction to the most helpful diagnostic tool in the trauma suite.
1130-1230 Lunch
1230-1315 Abdominal & Retroperitoneal Ultrasound
These lectures cover the anatomy of abdominal and retroperitoneal structures including, abdominal vasculature, gallbladder, spleen, liver and kidney. We also review the important pathology you will need to be able to recognize by ultrasound.
1315-1345 Pediatric GI Ultrasound: Appendicitis/Intussusception/Pyloric Stenosis
These lectures cover the normal anatomy and important pathology with regard to appendicitis, intussusception and pyloric stenosis. We will cover the sonogrpahic approach to performing these specialized scans and will provide a number of illustrative case studies

The best diagnostic tool for the patient in shock or cardiac arrest. The ONLY study to find a pericardial effusion and assess left ventricular function.

Abscess versus cellulitis. Know (snographically) when to I&D. Fractures, joint effusions (knee and hip) and other musculoskeletal pathology discussed.

1030-1100 Pulmonary Ultrasound
The lungs are to be seen and not heard. A sonographic look at pneumothorax, pleural effusions, pulmonary edema and pneumonia
1100-1145 Resuscitation and Critical Care Ultrasound
Case studies to illustrate the benefit of bedside ultrasound in the work-up and management of your sickest patients. This lecture introduces an essential protocol to evaluate the critically ill paediatric patient.
